Tom passed away Thursday, January 23, 2025 at the age of 70. He was born February 28, 1954 in Elkhart, Indiana to Roger and Willanna “Billi” (Honess) Horein. Tom was united in marriage to Laura DeRyke on October 9 th ,1982.
Tom was a dedicated and hardworking man who always put others first. There are countless stories where he lived true to his words…“Love is a 4-letter word.” He didn’t say “love” often, but he let his actions be an example of his love. He showed up with kindness to all who knew him, a coworker, a family member, or an unhoused person in need of food. Those who loved him stood witness to his generosity and care for others.
Tom lived the majority of his life in the Kalamazoo, MI area. The majority of his adult life was spent working in the trucking industry. It was here that he prided himself on the quality of his work and service to and connection with others. Tom put customers first just as he put those in his personal life first. In addition to employment, Tom also enjoyed bowling and coaching for many years. He also enjoyed learning about computers and building them. Tom would often build computers for those without. There was also his affinity for growing plants of all kinds, especially lilies.
When you think about Tom, you would be hard-pressed not to remember his lively sense of humor. He brought a smile to every room, not only with his humor, but again with his kindness. Tom was the “one-handed-handyman.” He could fix nearly anything and often in unconventional ways. He never let being “short- handed” stand in his way. But rather, he always showed up to help. And, if you really didn’t want to do the project, all you had to do was ask him to show you how and he would inevitably do it for you.
Tom was preceded in death by his oldest son, Roger Horein; and his parents, Roger and Billi Horein. Tom is survived by his wife, Laura; four children, Frederick Horein, Dennis (Theresa) Allen, Karen Horein, Mal (Abby) Horein and daughter-in-law, Amanda Horein; four siblings, Mike Horein, Bob Horein, Kathi Campbell, and Beth Horein Lang; as well as 14 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
We all love you. “DITTO”
